Listen to the Woods

By Calley McPherson

An adaptation of "Listen to the Rain"

by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault

Listen to the woods

the silence of the woods

the chirp of the crickets

the tweet of birds

the silence of the wood

Listen to the animals

the snap of twigs

the scratch of claws

the crunch of leaves

Listen to the animals

Listen to the footsteps

Creeping, crunching

Hide behind the maple tree

A gunshot a twig snap

the trail of blood to the forest

the footsteps

Listen to the Raven

walking silently

the innocent eyes of a

dead deer

The footsteps are back

there is no deer

only a single black feather

and a rock that says

"I’m watching"

I’m watching

Through the pine needles

Through Birchwood Branches

Behind the Beech

Under the canopy of maple

I’m watching
